HOW TO GET MARRIED IN COSTA RICA?



If you are planning to get married in Costa Rica, congratulations! You are making a good decision. You will be surrounded by nature and Costa Rican hospitality, also getting married in Costa Rica is very simple, there is no need of endless documentation, just have your passport valid at least 6 months before its expiration date.


Before your wedding, it is important to know a little bit about the country, so you can choose the venue that best suits your personality and your budget.


Requirements to get married


If you are a foreigner you will need:

  • Valid passport at least 6 months before its expiration date.

  • Affidavit in front of a notary public. You must declare freedom of status and your birth information.

  • Two witnesses


If you are Costa Rican you will need:

  • Identity card

  • Birth certificate

  • Certificate of freedom of state

  • Two witnesses


There is a special requirement for women who have been widowed or divorced, only after 300 days have elapsed can they get married or if this time has not passed according to Costa Rican legislation, the interested party may present a medical certificate issued by a forensic doctor of the Supreme Court of Justice of Costa Rica, where it is proven that she is not pregnant.


Make it Official!


For a marriage to be valid in Costa Rica it must be performed before a judge of the Republic, a Notary Public or a Catholic priest. Civil marriages performed in Costa Rica can be valid abroad. First the marriage certificate must be duly registered in the Costa Rican Civil Registry, then authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, get officially translated and in some cases certified and signed by the respective embassy.
